Ceratopsian Head Sculpt Process/ Stretch Goal Previews
over 6 years ago – Fri, Sep 27, 2019 at 09:14:47 AM

As we continue to toward that main campaign goal, I wanted to share some sculpt photos with you all for some stretch goal figure prototypes that are all currently in the works.

These heads were sculpted in traditional medium (CX5) by  Simon Panek on top of skulls digitally sculpted by Raul Ramos. After I work with Raul on the output size, the skull file would be sent to Simon for him to print and then sculpt on top of, assuring that the size and proportions were all in-sync.  I would then receive the skulls from Simon and add the jaw and neck articulation.

You can find more of Simon's work here at Lone Trike Studio : Deviant Art and Etsy

That's all for now- until next time!

over 6 years ago – Sun, Sep 22, 2019 at 10:36:15 AM

Since posting new updates of the stretch goal figures with 'in-hand' sizing photos and comparison shots with my newly acquired Jurassic World toys, several people have requested that I give the main four Ceratopsian figures the same treatment. So here are some brand new pics to help give more perspective on how these figures measure up!

Zuniceratops

Monoclonius

Triceratops (sub-adult)

Styracosaurus

We're now at 75%- looking good!  Thanks everyone.

New photos of Psittacosaurus, updated galleries, and more info on stretch goal tiers!
over 6 years ago – Sat, Sep 21, 2019 at 12:07:33 PM

Breezing right past that $100K mark, we are now well on our way to hitting the main goal! I've been scrambling over here to keep up with all the new photos for the stretch goal prototypes, but I seem to have caught up.. for now.

Psittacosaurus mongoliensis prototype

Coloration

Many people have been interested to know if this this figure based on the Bob Nicholls' Psittacosaurus reconstruction which has now become pretty well known. The answer is yes and no.

Nicholls' reconstruction from what I've read, was mainly based on Psittacosaurus lujiatunensis, so I took a lot of inspiration from that depiction, but also modified it a bit to show that it's not the same animal. An interesting thing I noticed on the photos I shot of my prototype was that in some, the face and tail appear to be black but I actually didn't use black- it's a mixture of magenta, dark brown, and ultramarine blue. That's why it looks more purple in certain shots depending on how the light hits it. An interesting and unexpected result.

Comparisons

And here are a few shots of Psittacosaurus with other Beasts of the Mesozoic figures as well as Jurassic World and Papo toys.

New galleries added

Three new galleries have been added at creative-beast.com for the first three stretch goals:

Protoceratops andrewsi

Chasmosaurus belli

Psittacosaurus mongoliensis

Gallery links have also been added on the campaign page.

Stretch Goal Tiers

Several people have asked if the stretch goal items will be available as their own tier level once they are unlocked, and the answer is yes. In addition, as more figures are unlocked, it will create new opportunities for bundle tier options such as a '1/6th scale tier' or other combinations.

Wave Releases

This ties in directly with unlocking the stretch goals. Looking back at my Raptor Series Kickstarter, one of things I would have done differently would have been to plan to release the figures in waves instead of all at once. Twenty-five figures is an enormous task for any factory, and of course, they ended up shipping in waves anyway, but not on the terms I would have preferred. Because I had not planned for this being an issue, they were trying to do too many figures at once, thus delaying all of them and ultimately releasing them in an order that was not ideal. It all got done of course and it worked out... eventually.

For this series though, I plan to stay out in front of this potential issue by planning releases in three waves, all of which are contingent on how many stretch goals are met. Assuming all 25 figures become available, with the 21 stretch goals unlocked, here is the release plan.

Wave 1- first 10 figures- estimated availability- Sept. 2020

Wave 2- next 8 figures- estimated availability- March. 2021

Wave 3- last 7 figures- estimated availability- Sept. 2021

Keep in mind that later waves will contain larger figures, so I have tried to balance the amount of work involved for the factories in each wave. The positive part of this is that backers will receive product sooner than having to wait until everything gets completed, because let's face it- that's a lot of figures! It will also allow the factories to focus on a smaller portion of the line at a time which I think will greatly benefit the production quality, especially given the complexity of the designs. The only drawback to this method is that each wave will require it's own shipping fee. This can be avoided by the bundled tiers which will offer discounts, or if you want your items held to save on shipping so that they ship all at once, that will be an option as well.

We're doing great, everyone- let's keep that momentum going!

Until next time.

Chasmosaurus comparison pics

Happy Friday! As we close in on that big $100K mark, I wanted to shine the spotlight on the #2 stretch goal, Chasmosaurus belli with new comparison shots along side some other Beasts of the Mesozoic 1/18th scale offerings as well as a few Jurassic World and Papo figures.

I'll be posting full galleries for this and Protoceratops to my website soon!

New interviews!

The Beasts of the Mesozoic Ceratopsians Series has been the recent topic of a couple interviews I did recently. For more insight on this project, I encourage you to take a look:

We have passed the half-way point! Plus, Protoceratops comparison photos!
over 6 years ago – Thu, Sep 19, 2019 at 08:01:14 AM

Wow, in well under two days we have already passed the half-way marker for the initial funding goal! Thank you all so much for the early support. I know many of your are eager to get to those stretch goals and so am I. Speaking of stretch goals...

Protoceratops comparison photos

I noticed that a few people were a bit surprised by the price of the 1st stretch goal Protoceratops, with a base price of $70, but then I realized that I neglected to show how large it was in comparison to the main campaign figures. It is indeed the largest of the figures on the campaign page at the moment. We all know Protoceratops as a smaller dinosaur, so I can see how this can confuse expectations, but at the 1/6 scale, he's a decently-sized figure. Take a look!

And as a bonus, a couple shots with the new Jurassic World figures.

I hope this helps!

Looking forward to day three- let's smash that main funding goal!
